The form is derived from the verb פֿײַפֿן, but the meaning appears to be a calque of Polish świstak 'marmot', from świstać 'to whistle'; from Proto-Slavic ✱svistati (cf. Russian свиста́ть 'to whistle'); from PIE ✱sweys-d- 'to hiss'.
