ETYMOLOGY
Latin vīvus 'living, lively', likely a calque of Hebrew חיים and/or יחיאל. The early Ashkenazic forms are Vivus, Vives, Vivis. Rabbinical sources often erroneously derive פֿײַוווש from the Greek name Φοῖβος (Phoebus), an epithet of Apollo, god of light.
