ETYMOLOGY

[Why the alternative past participles with /o/ or /oj/? The /o/ may reflect MHG gevrorn when the root syllable was closed.]
Herzog writes that the alternation [gefrojrn/gefrejrn] is typical of vowel 42 (MHG vrœren, past participle gevrœrt 'to cause to freeze'), while [gefrorn] suggests vowel 41 (/o/ in a closed syllable). He concludes that there was a merger in Yiddish of the transitive and intransitive forms of the verb (MHG vriesen, p.p. gevrorn and vrœrn, p.p.gevrœrt) and that, though the final nasal constitutes a separate syllable in Yiddish, it most sometimes be considered, historically, as syllable closing. [Almost certainly so in WY and in earlier periods of the language.]

ON frjósa, OE frēosan, English to freeze, Dutch vriezen, (past participle) gevroren, OHG friosan, (past participle) gifroren, MHG vriesen, (past participle) gevrorn, NHG frieren; from PGmc ✱freusan- 'to freeze' (or ✱freusa-, or ✱frews-) (with Verner alternation ✱freusan-, (past participle) ✱fruzana-) < ✱préus-e- (WEUR) (or ✱preu̯s-). (Kluge/Seebold thinks ✱freusa- originally meant 'to spray', from a PIE root ✱preus-.)
The original past participle was ✱frusta- < ✱prus-to- (see פֿראָסט).
Perhaps related Latin pruīna 'frost', Sanskrit pruṣvā́- 'dew drop',
