OE fleax, English flax, OS flas, Dutch vlas, OHG flahs, MHG vlahs, NHG Flachs; from PGmc ✱flahsa- 'flax' (or ✱flahso) (DRV); thematized s-stem derived from the PIE root ✱pleḱ- 'to braid' (see פֿלעכטן), an extension of ✱pel- 'to hit' (or to fold?).
