ETYMOLOGY

[Why is the vowel /i/ instead of /u/ as in NHG? Probably this is not the original noun, but derived secondarily from the verb פֿיטערן.}
Got. fodr 'scabbard, sheath, casing', ON fóðr, OE fōdor, English fodder, Dutch voeder, OHG fuotar, MHG vuoter, NHG Futter; from PGmc ✱fōdra- 'fodder'; from PIE ✱peh₂-dʰro- (or ✱pā-tro-, from the root ✱pā-t-, ✱pə-t- 'feed, graze, nourish', or from ✱peh₂-(i)- 'protect, guard, graze'); related to ✱fōdjan- 'to feed' (OE fēdan, English to feed);
Related: Latin pābulum 'fodder'
