ETYMOLOGY

MLG vunke, Dutch vonk, OHG funko, MHG vunke, vunk NHG Funke(n); from PGmc ✱funkan- (DRV) (or ✱fun-k-ōn 'spark, fire'), derived from the verb ✱funkōn- 'to sparkle': MHG vunken 'to shimmer, shine, sparkle' < ✱pnk-néh₂- (GM); itself the iterative to the strong verb ✱finkan- 'to sparkle, burn': NHG (obsolete) finkeln 'to burn, hurt'; related to MHG vinc and vanke 'spark'.
Kroonen writes that it is not from PIE ✱ph₂un- 'fire'.
