ETYMOLOGY
The comparison האַרט ווי אַ פּאָדעשווע 'hard as a sole' may be a calque of Polish twardy jak podeszwa (said of meat that is tough to eat).
According to Beider, the initial stress indicates that the word was borrowed from Polish before the 17th c.
Polish podeszwa; cf. Ukrainian підошва; Belarusian падэшва.
