ETYMOLOGY

Formally from MHG gesegenen 'to make the sign of the cross, bless; to say goodbye, depart' (cf. ENHG gesegnen); from OHG giseganōn; from Latin signāre 'to sign'.
The meaning 'to take one's leave, say goodbye' was strengthened because the same Germanism was borrowed into Polish pożegnać / żegnać się 'to take one's leave.
