MHG spital (cf. NHG Spital); from medieval Latin hospitale 'hospice for travelers and the sick'; from Latin (cubiculum) hospitale 'guest room'; from Latin hospes 'guest'.
Also borrowed from MHG into Polish szpital (since the 15th c.) (which could affect Yiddish pronunciation).
