ETYMOLOGY

MHG smecken, smacken 'to taste, preceive taste'; OHG smecken 'to perceive taste', smacken 'to give off a taste' (cf. English it smacks of ...); derived from the noun West Germanic ✱smakka- 'taste' (cf. MHG smac(h), OHG smac, OE smæc(c)), which displays intensive gemination compared to the simple MHG smachen, smache. cf. Lithuanian smaguriaĩ 'tidbits'; smãginti 'to taste'.
