ETYMOLOGY

Hebrew שֶׁקֶץ. Max Weinreich suggests that the voiced /g/ instead of /k/ may be the result of the Loez substrate, i.e. the consonant /k/ was voiced intervocalically in Loez and the word was maintained in this form even after Loez-speaking Jews migrated to German lands. {מאַקס ווײַנרײַך, געשיכטע פֿון דער ייִדישער שפּראַך, 4: 6}
