ETYMOLOGY
{Why medial [b]? Beider notes that [b] was common in High German until the 17th c. and is still found in Silesian and Bavarian.}
{Beider 2015: 103.}
I. Proto-Yiddish ✱ʃvɛːbəl; Proto-EY ✱ʃvɛːbl; from MHG swebel; cf. NHG Schwefel.
II. MHG swevel, swebel; from OHG swebal.
III. Gothic swibls; OE swefel; OS suuebel
DW¹ suggests it is from the old verb ✱sweban 'to sleep'. They also suggest that the alternation of [f] and [b] are a result of accent changes in the paradigm and Verner's Law.
