ENHG schatten; from MHG schate; from OHG scato; from PGm. ✱skadu-; cf. Got. skadus; OE sceadu; English shadow, shade; from PIE ✱sḱh₃-tú-, from the root ✱sḱeh₃- 'dark'; cf. Greek σκότος 'darkness'.
{DW¹ 14: 2231; Kroonen 2013: 438}
The idiom וואַרפֿן אַ שאָטן אויף 'to cast a shadow on (i.e. a pall; doubt; a slur)' appears to be a calque of Polish rzucić / rzucać cień na kogoś/na coś.
