ETYMOLOGY
MHG rouben; OHG roubōn; cf. ON raufa 'to tear'; OE rēafian; OS rōbon; from PGmc ✱raub-ō-; probably derived from the PGmc strong verb ✱reuf-a- 'to tear' (cf. ON rjúfa, rjófa, OE rofen 'broken', OE berofen 'robbed'); related to Latin rumpere 'to break, tear', Sanskrit rúpyati 'to cause pain'.
