ETYMOLOGY

In the biological meaning 'cell' coined by I. L. Peretz {מאַקס ווײַנרײַך, געשיכטע פֿון דער ייִדישער שפּראַך, 1: 29}
It appears to be a calque of Polish komórka 'cell' (diminutive of komora 'storage room', borrowed from Latin camera), itself a calque of Latin cellula. See קאָמאָרניק.
