kaal [HOLLAND, Beem, Jerosche]
- Kaal schteit. 'The congregation stands (up). Custom requires the congregation to stand up at different points of the liturgy, which is the background of this expression. Mockingly used when somebody remains standing despite the invitation to sit down.' {Jerosche №410}
- Kaal sol nit uf e jooched warten. 'The community is greater than an individual.' {Jerosche №411}
Bernst. 129 - A juchid gegen kuhol, ferlirt ale mul.
- Das is e kaals mesŏse. 'She lets herself be kissed by everyone: said of a frivolous girl.' {Jerosche №412}
- Gebt Kaal kaan biks, geb isch kaan deit. 'If the community doesn't give a rifle, I won't give a penny. If the competent authorities do not want to carry out their responsibilities, I will not do mine. Love cannot come from only one side.' {Jerosche №413}
- Kol kaal e makke, hot jederman e blôter. Var. Kol jisroel e makke, is fier jederman e blotersche (bleitersche). 'If the whole community (is) an abscess, everyone has a blister.' {Jerosche №414}
Bernst. 232 - As es kümt auf kuhol a maku, kümt auf dem juchid a bleterl. (Apparently corrupt)
Bernst. 45 - got is a futer, as er git nit kejn maku, git er a bluter.
- (Wan is de choppe?) Wen kaal choppeklaader gibt. 'Scornful of poor young people who have to postpone their marriage plans.' {Jerosche №415}
- Wen kaal schpielt de baas, schnelt man den parnas vor die naas. 'When the community plays the boss, the parns gets hit in the nose. A director who does not know how to assert his authority is in danger of being ridiculed by them. (Baas = English boss.)' {Jerosche №416}
- Lehnst uf mir? Lehn uf kaal! 'Are you supporting me? Support the kaal! Ironic rejection of request for help. Ask the congregation (kaal) because I cannot (will not) do it. (Original: Steun je op mij? Steun op kaal! Ironische afwizjing van verzoek om hulp. Vraag de gemeente (kaal), want ik kan (wil) het niet doen.)' {Jerosche №552}
