ETYMOLOGY

{Presumably the initial n- in the main Yiddish form came from rebracketing with the indefinite article: אַן אָל > אַ נאָל, similar to English "a nickname" from "an eke name".}
Got. ✱ēla, ON alr OE ǣl (or æl?), eal, English awl, OHG āla (or ala?), MHG âle (or ale?), NHG Ahle; from PGmc ✱ēlō (or ✱ǣlō), gen. ✱alaz; from PIE ✱h₁éh₁l-eh₂, gen. ✱h₁h̥₁l-h₂ós, or from ✱ēlā 'pointy instrument', or from ✱olā.
