ETYMOLOGY

Polish mętny, (dialectal) mątny; Belarusian му́тны; Ukrainian му́тни́й; from Proto-Slavic ✱mǫtьnъ.
{Herzog 1964: 108}
The idiom כאַפּן פֿיש אין מוטנעם וואַסער 'to catch fish in murky water (i.e., to make money in an unethical way)' appears to be a calque of Polish łowić ryby w mętnej wodzie.
