ETYMOLOGY

The long vowel in CY /laˑgər/ shows it was probably borrowed directly from NHG Lager 'lamp'.
Polish łagier 'Soviet forced labor camp, gulag'; from Russian ла́герь (from NHG); Polish lagier 'German concentration camp' (from NHG);
NHG Lager; from MHG leger; from OHG legar; from PGmc leg-ra- (n.) 'camp'.
A new variant with /a/, rather than /e/, appeared in MHG in the 14th c. and came to dominate thanks to Martin Luther. The original vowel can still be seen in געלעגער ,באַלעגערן, באַלעגערונג, and לעגער־סחורה.
