Polish jeż, Ukrainian (dialect) již, (dialect) ož, also: Russian ёж < ežь 'hedgehog' < Proto-Balto-Slavic ✱eźios; cf. Lithuanian ežỹs < ✱h₁eǵʰ-io-; perhaps from ✱eǵʰi- 'snake' (say Kluge/Seebold)
Related: Greek éxĩnos 'hedgehog, sea-urchin' (which looks like a derivative from exis 'viper'.
