OE drōf turbid; troubled', OS drōbi 'cloudy, sad', Dutch droef, OHG truobi 'turbid, dark, confused', MHG trüebe 'dim, gloomy' < PGm. ✱drōbu- 'turbid; troubled' (EUR) or ✱drōba-/ja- (Kroonen writes that it was originally a u-stem remodeled as a ja-stem in continental Germanic). Perhaps from PIE ✱dʰrebʰ- 'to fracture'; cf. Lithuanian drebėti 'to quiver', Russian дроба́ (see דרויב).
Related to ✱drabiz- 'dregs' (ON draf 'draff, husks').
Perhaps related to Polish drobny 'small, tiny' (see דראָבנע), Ukrainian дрібний (see דריבנע) ' < Proto-Slavic ✱drobьnъ 'small, fine'.
