ETYMOLOGY

{A Germanism borrowed from NHG in the 19th c.?}
ON draumr, OE drēam, English dream, OS drōm, Dutch droom, OHG troum, MHG troum, NHG Traum; from PGmc ✱drauma- 'dream' < ✱draugma- < ✱dʰrougʰ-mo- (DRV); a mo-stem derived from the strong verb ✱dreugan- 'to mislead' (NHG betrügen, see באַטריגן).

CENTRAL

Katz indicates that Southern dialects say trò:(u)(ə)m (under אַן עבר⸗טרוים) [the usual result of MHG ou should be /ɔj/ - but since the word is likely a Germanism, it may reflect the effort to pronounce NHG Traum.}
