Related to OE dēor 'wild, bold, brave', English to doze, MHG dosen 'to slumber'; from PGmc ✱dusēn- 'to slumber' < ✱dʰús-eh₁-ie- (EUR); cf. Latin furō 'to be mad, rave', Lithuanian dùsti 'to suffocate', dùsas 'asthma', Old Church Slavonic duxŭ 'breath, spirit', Russian дух, Ukrainian дух, Polish duch (see דוך) < Proto-Slavic ✱dȗxъ 'breath, spirit' < Proto-Balto-Slavic ✱douṣos; cf.
