ON dygð 'virtue', OE duguð 'manhood; glory, advantage; multitude', Dutch deugd, OHG tugund(i), tugind, tuged, MHG tugent, tugende, NHG Tugend; from PGmc ✱dugunþi- 'valor' (DRV) (and ✱dugiþō?), derived from ✱dugan- (see טויגן) with the suffix -unþi- (see יוגנט).
