{Interesting that this old modal verb is maintained in Yiddish but mostly died in NHG. The FNHDW writes that it gradually went out of use in the 16th c., though it appears to survive in German dialects.
The Yiddish conjugation with vowel A3 (MHG short /a/ lengthened probably because of the following /r/) is based on the MHG and ENHG 3sg. tar, not on the old plural or infinitive forms. Similarly English dare.}
