ETYMOLOGY

Polish wąsy (plural) 'mustache'; cf. Ukrainian вуса; Belarusian вусы; Russian усы́; from Proto-Slavic ✱vǫsъ, from ✱ǫ̃sъ; from PIE ✱wondʰ-s-om, from the root ✱wendʰ- 'hair, wool, beard' {?}; cf. OHG wintbrāwa 'eye-lash' (see ווימפּער).

There is notably no variant from East Slavic (without the nasal) even East of Polish linguistic territory. The Eastern variants with /n/ and /c/ show the "de-Polonization" of the loan word in the direction of native Yiddish patterns.
