ETYMOLOGY

The idiom פֿאַרקויפֿן די בכורה פֿאַר אַ טאָפּ לינדזן 'to sell one's birthright for a bowl of lentils (to sell yourself too cheaply)' refers to the Biblical story of Isaac and Esau. Similarly in Polish: oddać coś za miskę soczewicy 'to give something up for a bowl of lentils'.
