ETYMOLOGY
Beider notes that there is no indication that the name came through German. The vowel change [ie] > [ej] is also present in קווייט and קלייט. He suggests that the Yiddish diphthong arose due to "anticipatory softening" before a palatalized consonant.
Polish Bielawa.
