ETYMOLOGY
{Why is MHG short /a/ in a closed syllable shifted to /o/ in Eastern Yiddish? Perhaps the vowel was lengthened early on before the following /r/. No sign of /o/ in MHG or ENHG.
The vowel is /o/ in much of Central where we would expect /u/. Why? Perhaps influenced by the vowel of Polish boso 'barefoot'.
The /v/ in באָרוועס seems to reflect the
ON berr, OE bær, English bare, barfoot, OS bar, Dutch barre-voets 'barefoot', OHG bar 'naked, bare; pure; public', barafuozi, MHG bar, barvuoz, ENHG bar, barfus, barfüssig, NHG bar, barfuß PGmc ✱baza- 'naked, visible'; from PIE ✱bʰos-ó- 'bare, barefoot' < ✱bʰes- 'to chew, rub, sweep'; cf. Lithuanian bãsas, 'barefoot', Latvian bass, Old Church Slavonic босъ , Russian босо́й, Old Armenian bok 'barefoot'
