ETYMOLOGY

The idiom אַ וויץ מיט אַ באָרד 'a joke with a beard (i.e., an old joke)' appears to be a calque of Polish kawał / dowcip z brodą.

The final voicing in באָרד is perhaps due to the influence of the Slavic cognates (e.g. Polish broda) when final voicing was introduced in NEY and SEY (when? perhaps under the influence of Ukrainian?). The Slavic cognates perhaps also explain the feminine gender in Eastern Yiddish.
