ETYMOLOGY

{Interesting that the Yiddish form and meaning are so close to NHG.
Kluge/Seebold note that the meaning 'to command' came to dominate only in NHG. The simple verb without a prefix died out after the OHG period.}
Got. filhan, ON fela 'to hide, conceal; to give in trust', OE felan, feolan, felgan 'to stick, adhere; to proceed, go, reach; to undergo', OS bi-felhan 'to entrust, bestow, command; to bury', Dutch velen 'to suffer', OHG felhan, fel(a)han 'to trust, hand over', MHG be-velhen 'to entrust, hand over', (past participle) bevoln, bevaln, ENHG befehlen, befelchen, befelhen, NHG befehlen; from PGmc ✱felhan- 'to hide' (or ✱felh-a- 'to penetrate; hide, bury') < ✱pélk-e- (GM); perhaps from the PIE root ✱pel- 'to cover, conceal'.
Related: perhaps Old Prussian pelkis 'cloak'.
