ETYMOLOGY
ONG band, OE beand, English band, OS band, OHG bant, MHG bant, NHG Band; from PGmc ✱banda- 'band, bond' < ✱bʰondʰj-o- (DRV); cf. Young Avestan baṇda- 'bond, fetter'
Derived from ✱bindan- (see בינדן).
The meaning 'volume' arose in German in the 17th c. from the verb einbinden 'to bind (a book)' (see אײַנבינדן). The English meaning '(music) band' does not seem to have entered Yiddish.
