ON bǫllr 'ball', English ball, OHG bal, ballo (weak), MHG bal, balle (weak), ENHG bal, balle, ballen NHG Ball, Ballen 'ball of the foot, of the hand, fingers' < ✱ballan- 'ball' < ✱balō, gen. ✱ballaz < ✱bʰol-on- (EUR) < ✱bʰól-ōn, ✱bʰl-n-nós, perhaps from an unattested PIE verbal root ✱bʰel- 'to swell up'; cf. Latin follis 'bag, sack; ball testicle', Greek φαλλός
MHG bal as a toy (initially for women!) came from French bal < Italian palla (with augmentive pallone > balloon באַלאָן) < Langobardic ✱balla.
