'to deceive'

ETYMOLOGY

{A Germanism borrowed from NHG in the 19th c.? So marked in Stutchkoff's Thesaurus, but not by Niborski/Weisbrot. Perhaps the past participle באַטראָגן indicates a borrowing, since MHG getrogen might have diphthongized to ✱✱געטרויגן just like געבויגן, געצויגן; on the other hand, געקראָגן, געצוואָגן}
OS driogan, bidriogan, OHG triogan, bitriogan, MHG triegen 'to deceive, betray', betriegen, ENHG triegen, betriegen, NHG (with rounded vowel beginning in the 17th c., dominant by 19th c.) trügen, betrügen; from PGmc ✱dreugan- 'to mislead'; from PIE ✱dʳéugʰ-e-; cf. ON draugr 'ghost', Sanskrit drúhyati 'to deceive', dróha- 'insult, betrayal', Avestan družaiti 'to lie', Latin fraus 'deceit'.
