Got. airzeis 'deluded, misled, in error', OS irri 'furious', OHG irri 'erring, ignorant', MHG irre 'astray'; from PGmc ✱erzja- 'stray; angry'; from PIE ✱h₁ers-io- , from the root ✱h₁ers-, perhaps identical to ✱h₁ers- 'to flow', and perhaps also to ✱h₁ers- 'to boil, to rage'.
