ETYMOLOGY
Got. azgo 'ashes', ON aska, OE æsche, asce, axe, OHG asca 'ashes, dust', MHG asche, esche (secondary umlaut caused by the following /ʃ/), NHG Asche; from PGmc ✱askōn- 'ashes'; from PIE h₂ed-dʰ-gʷʰ-eh₂-(?) (compound of ✱h₂ed- 'to dessicate' + ✱dʰegʷʰ- 'to burn'); or perhaps from PIE ✱azg- < ✱h₂es- 'to be hot, dry'; cf. Latin āridus 'dry', Sansrit ā́sa- 'ashes, dust',
Perhaps from the root ✱has- 'hearth'.
