ON argr 'unmanly, cowardly; lewd', OE earg 'cowardly, timid', ME argh OHG arg, arag 'greedy, cowardly', MHG arc 'bad', (comp.) erger, arger; from PGmc ✱arga- 'cowardly, unmanly'; from PIE ✱h₃orǵʰ-o-, from the root ✱h₃erǵʰ- 'to copulate'; cf. Lithuanian eržùs, (dial.) aržùs 'ardent, voluptuous, stubborn'; Russian ерзать 'to fidget'
