ETYMOLOGY

The first element, ־ער־, is an old feminine genitive adjective ending (cf. NHG der schön-er Frau), while ־הייט is an old noun, MHG heit 'way, manner'; from West Germanic ✱haidu- (cf. English -hood, from OE hād; Gothic haidus). A similar adverbial construction is NHG -erweise, in which the -er- is the old genitive and the -weise an old noun meaning 'way, manner'.
